In the role of a Senior NOC technician I maintained many of the tasks as a core technician. In addition to this we also identify potential issues on the network and create service affecting events to be completed overnight. This includes writing a outline of the work to be completed, acquiring parts needed and coordinating field technician as well as access to the site.
We are also required to pull and document the services that will be affected by this event. This involves us pulling the information from the equipment and then going through the waves to break down all services that may be affected
I came into the Firstlight Core NOC on overnights. The main priority of the overnight team was to preform service affecting maintenance events. This scope of work included equipment replacement, OS upgrades, identification of loss points on inter office connections.
Our tasks also included monitoring the network, working tickets for carrier clients, and troubleshooting/dispatching on global network events should the arise.
In this role I gained a good understanding of DWDM across multiple platforms. This equipment includes Ciena 6500, Cyan Z33 + Z77 platforms, and Cisco ONS 15454.
Daily tasks involved the instillation and turn up of Data and Voice equipment as well as trouble tickets to repair network equipment and customer devices. Instillation of switches included Ciena 3903,3906,3930 and 3931 CPE's. We also installed Cisco and Adtran products for our voice and T1 customers.
We also carried Viavi OTDR unit on our trucks, this test set was utilized to isolate damaged areas on our fiber transport.
For new turn ups field technicians slotted optics, ran jumpers within the CO and connected the cabling to the FDP panel to go to the customer.
In this role I gained the physical knowledge of the CO and customer equipment and how they interconnect with each other.
Our footprint in Plattsburgh also required support of copper customers. This would involve taking readings on the copper and isolating issues in the transport, moving copper pairs if needed, and utilizing tone generators to locate undocumented connections
I Started my career in telecom at Primelink. I was brought in as a level 1 helpdesk technician after an internship during my associates degree. In this position I answered phone calls from residential and enterprise customers, opened tickets, and preformed base level troubleshooting. Primelinks product allowed me to interface with GPON fiber services, DSL connections, and Voice products. We primarly worked on Calix, All Optic, and OSI fiber platforms. Our copper products utilized occam and adtran chassis's. Voice products for SIP were provided through a Metaswitch, and copper voice connections utilized a DMS100. I began proficient with navigating and troubleshooting these platforms in my time as a Repair technician
