EHS Lead

JOHNSON CONTROLS INC (Chillers Manufcturing)

I´m starting as a EHS responsible for Stiva 1 plant.

Stiva 1 is a plant with 2300 workers, considering salary and hourly employees.


In my lead, I work with 2 EHS engineers (safety and environmental), 1 EHS auxiliary, 2 EHS interns, 1 EHS-IT intern, 1 EHS Technician lead, 13 EHS technician, 2 security coordinator with 20 security officers and 1 Doctor with a nurse coordinator and 3 nurses.


My principal responsibilities are:

  • Ensure payroll for team.
  • Promote good work environment.
  • Ensure training program for EHS staff.
  • Ensure EHS training program for employees through training department.
  • Ensure Environmental, Health, Safety and Security legal compliance.
  • Ensure JCMS implementation by EHS technicians in each focus factory team,
  • Ensure continues improvement.
  • Report KPI´s to EHS manager and JCI corporate.
  • Evaluate lead and lagger indicators.

EHS Engineer Spec 1

JOHNSON CONTROLS INC (Chillers Manufacturing)

I was hired to optimize process in different topics and implement new projects related to EHS focused on Johnson Controls Management System.

Hazardous and Non Hazardous handled by EHS technician

  • I designed a car to transport drums, creating a sled and pulled by a tugger.
  • We implemented a drum turner to avoid labor deceases.
  • For pallets, we designed a platform.

Forklifts for Stiva 1, Scroll and distribution center.

  • I was the responsible to renew forklifts and tugger for stiva 1 and Distribution Center, considering new technology in equipments.
  • For stiva scroll. This plant started up on february 2024 and I was the responsible for evaluate and suminister forklift and tuggers.
  • Tuggers and forklift was equipped with safety technology as GPS, proximity sensors, laser, cameras, audible and visual alarms. Updates includes a platform to data analysis.

Refrigerant administration.

  • Design and implement correct process to recovery and cleaning refrigerant.
  • Improve manual recycling refrigerant to automatic recycling.
  • Reducing an average of 4 hours per day of down time by recovery refrigerant process to 0 hours per day in down time.

A2L implementation.

  • Implement preventive actions according PSM analysis in plant scroll.
  • Actually working on PSM for Stiva 1 and test laboratory.

Digitalization.

  • Actually, we are working on digitalization of safety permits, data bases, app to report acts and unsafe conditions.

Focus Factory Calibration.

  • Define score per area according hazardous chemist handling, hazardous and non hazardous waste, Job Safety Analysis, LoTo Procedures, legal compliance and ergonomic evaluations rate.
  • I was part of each multidisciplinary team in Stiva 1.

Contractors digital Management.

  • Design a contractors policies, training, matrix, requirements and behavior evaluations.

Peeview for Stiva 2 and Stiva 3.

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in Lay out, flow chart process and improvements for new plants.

Employee of the month.

  • I was honored by a employee of the month in Johnson Controls considering different aspects of my performance.

EHS technician training program.

  • Evaluate current knowledge.
  • Designed and execute training program.

Safety incidents and accidents.

  • Conducted incident and accident investigations, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Training program for all staff about accident and incident investigation process, including root cause analysis.

Responsible EHS&S for Monterrey and Rio Bravo facilities.


Safety

  • Implement safety programs and policies in the Start up of Monterrey Plant.
  • Provided new-employee health and safety orientations and developed materials for presentations.
  • Identified accident and incident causes and optimal prevention strategies by conducting thorough investigations and analyses.
  • IMSS cost reduction. For Rio Bravo Facilities, we reduce since class 3 to class 1. In Monterrey plant, we reduce since class 5 to class 4.
  • Reduce Evacuation time in Monterrey facilities. In the first evacuation drill, we obtained 5 minutes and after 2 years of hard team work, we obtained 3 minutes in evacuation drill, having 4 internal brigades and being part of common support team with other factories the same industrial park.

Health

  • COVID 19 preventive program. This program includes vaccine activities for employees and their families. All legal compliance with "Secretaria de Salud" to continue operations.
  • Spearheaded ergonomic assessments to improve employee comfort and reduce injuries related to repetitive motion or poor posture by MAC tool and RAPP Tool.
  • We started a project with Kern Liebers corporate, promoting automatic spring rolling, avoiding high risk of hand labor diseases.

Environmental

  • Championed energy conservation initiatives leading to reductions. We started a project measuring energy intensity and energy efficiency.
  • Educated employees on hazardous waste management, emergency response and safe work practices.
  • Supervised management, handling and shipping of hazardous waste.
  • GHG calculation.

Security

  • Implement procedures and policies for Monterrey plant.
  • We reduced intrusions to facility from 2-3 per month to 0 in all my administration.

Facilities

  • In 2023 Monterrey plant had the opportunity to celebrate the starting up receiving Kern Liebers CEO, some Kern Liebers investors, Nuevo Leon finance secretary, Guadalupe mayor and some other governance parts. I was the responsible for renew installations considering painting, construction, gardens, infrastructure for event and some others responsabilities.
  • Responsible for cleaning activities and staff for that.

Legal compliance

  • Ensured regulatory compliance by conducting thorough facility audits and inspections.
  • Coordinated with external agencies for permitting, reporting, and other regulatory requirements, avoiding costly fines or penalties due to non-compliance issues.

Certifications

  • ISO 14001:2015 certification in 2021 for Rio Bravo Facilities
  • ISO 14001:2015 certification in 2022 for Monterrey Plant
  • CTPAT certification for Rio Bravo Facilities in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
  • CTPAT register for Monterrey facilities in 2021 and certification in 2022.
  • Internal audits for: ISO 14001:2015, CTPAT and ISO16949.

Continues improvement.

  • Applied strong leadership talents and problem-solving skills to maintain team efficiency and organize workflows.
  • Developed and executed process remodeling project plans. The principal multidisciplinary project that I led was steel scrap reduction. Initially scrap percentage was on 20% scrap of total production steel handled. After project implementation, steel scrap was on 6% of total production, having saves for more than one million dollars in the first year.
  • I started the North America EHS learned lessons meetings, promoting monthly meetings with rest of the EHS responsible in plants to identify projects with high possibilities to be implemented in other facilities.
